This Portal describes some of the mystical, spiritual, and mythical aspects of Woman. The Samis (indigenous Scandinavians) believe that when Aurora Borealis occurs, the veil that separates the living and the dead is at its thinnest, and this is the perfect opportunity to communicate with one's ancestors. The figure represented at the top is the goddess Uksakka, or "Door Woman," who guards the entrance to homes and confers blessings on those who enter and exit.  She is also one of three daughters of, and an assistant to Maderakka, the goddess of childbirth and midwifery.
