The chain outside symbolizes limitation—perhaps imposed by society, perhaps self-imposed. The butterflies speak of a yearning and preparation for liberation. The artichoke is a reference to peeling away layers to get at the heart of the matter. There's also a sensuality associated with the artichoke in the way one uses one's teeth to scrape off the delicious edible part from the leaf.
