Gaia Silenced and Submerged by Elizabeth Roetzel

Gaia Silenced and Submerged

12x9, Collage on Panel, SOLD

An allegorical piece depicting humankind's transition from matriarchal, nature-based spirituality to patriarchal organized religion.

Gaia (one name for the Earth Mother Goddess) is being baptized (submerged) by a domineering male figure. The serpent skin and apple slices reference the Biblical story of Eve's responsibility in causing humankind's expulsion from the Garden of Eden (apparently Adam wasn't created with a brain of his own).

The calla lily is a symbol of magnificent beauty, in this case, Gaia's. The skull is a symbol of her death. The woven metal represents a kind of prison. The piece is adorned on one side by a mourning veil and is surrounded by teardrops. Dirt was used for texture at the edges as an additional reference to the "Earth Mother" and as a reference to being buried.
