<image:caption>14 x 11, Assemblage on Canvas, SOLD This Portal describes some of the mystical, spiritual, and mythical aspects of Woman. The Samis (indigenous Scandinavians) believe that when Aurora Borealis occurs, the veil that separates the living and the dead is at its thinnest, and this is the perfect opportunity to communicate with one's ancestors. The figure represented at the top is the goddess Uksakka, or "Door Woman," who guards the entrance to homes and confers blessings on those who enter and exit. <image:caption>12 x 9, Assemblage on Canvas Sometimes there comes a point when it's time to leave a relationship or situation, to strike out on a new adventure, and in the process become a new person. In either case, transformation occurs.</image:caption>

Regardless of what kind of mother we had--even if we never knew her—every step we take, in any direction, is affected by this first relationship. The netting can be a safety net or we can feel caught in a net—restricted by maternal rules or expectations. The fire also has multiple meanings: being warmed by the fire of love, walking through fire together, or being burned—such is the complexity that often exists between mothers and daughters.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portals - Into the Mystic</image:title>
<image:caption>12 x 9, Assemblage on Canvas, SOLD This title was borrowed from the classic Van Morrison song. While constructing this Portal I made up a story about a romantic evening where a couple in elegant evening attire leaves an event held lakeside and decides to take a rowboat home. The crystal at top references a ballroom chandelier and also the mystical properties that are ascribed to crystals. The title also refers to the mystery that is Woman and that is relationships.</image:caption>

<image:title>Portals - There Was a Time When Love Was Blind</image:title>
<image:caption>12 x 9, Assemblage on Canvas, SOLD I was inspired to create this piece after viewing a YouTube video of Susan Boyle auditioning for "Britain's Got Talent." I watched the judges and audience scoff at her somewhat unkempt and frumpy appearance, then was overcome by emotion (literally sobbed and sprouted full body goosebumps) as she began singing in her magnificent, angelic voice. Suddenly the same audience that had jeered her was now cheering and applauding her. I used folded canvas and muslin to represent her unadorned "exterior," or physical appearance. As we move inward, I used ribbon, lace, and gold pieces to symbolize her inner beauty and value. At the center is Scottish heather (a nod to her homeland), a beautiful blue sky, light fluffy clouds, and sunshine. The gold-lined musical notes are those that accompany the words in her audition song, "I Dreamed a Dream." The Madonna at the top is Our Lady of Lourdes, the name of the Catholic church that Susan has attended all of her life. The title is a line from the song she sang, and refers to the fact that the audience's love of her inner beauty allowed them to turn a blind eye to her outer appearance. This was the first of the portals that included fabric and hand stitchery.</image:caption>

Gaia (one name for the Earth Mother Goddess) is being baptized (submerged) by a domineering male figure. The serpent skin and apple slices reference the Biblical story of Eve's responsibility in causing humankind's expulsion from the Garden of Eden (apparently Adam wasn't created with a brain of his own). The calla lily is a symbol of magnificent beauty, in this case, Gaia's. The skull is a symbol of her death. The woven metal represents a kind of prison. The piece is adorned on one side by a mourning veil and is surrounded by teardrops. Dirt was used for texture at the edges as an additional reference to the "Earth Mother" and as a reference to being buried.</image:caption>

<image:caption>12 x 9, Assemblage on Canvas One symbolism for the waterfall is outer constancy combined with inner growth. The body of the waterfall remains the same even though the individual drops are renewed each second. This aspirational piece reminds us that our potential for inner change is unlimited. Also, the sound of falling water is comparable to the sound of breath, thus denoting the flow of life, energy, and consciousness. The title was taken from a line in a Jimi Hendrix song, "Fall with me for a million days...oh, my waterfall.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bio - About Liz</image:title>
<image:caption>Liz describes herself as a conceptual artist with a decorative sensibility. She creates abstract art about subjects that are meaningful to her while incorporating her love for strong color, well-defined edges, and interesting composition. She admits with humor that she pays almost obsessive attention to detail and that she strives continually to strike a balance between surrender and control while creating her art. Her work has been described as elegant, boldly feminine, thought provoking, and oftentimes playful. Since earning her BFA at Memphis College of Art in 2007, Liz’s work has been juried into numerous group and solo shows. In addition to painting, Liz is an avid nature photographer.</image:caption>
